outside the tyres cut the wet road every quarter of an hour the time i am told the fire is dying embers are gray outside the world is starting its day changing the strings to make old songs sound new cleaning my windows trying to change my view roaches come crawling memories of love outside the world is slowly waking up and i am alone

please believe me my fellow liars for i know not what you'll find though i've been there i stole the t-shirt in xl, black. state of mind? i'm stoned. cold. crazy now looking for redemption a place beyond desire a cloud where even gods are forced to climb higher when you're stoned. cold. crazy. love your moon when you're stoned. cold. crazy. love your moon its second-hand sunlight might guide you home i'm looking for pale shelter a place in common ground a hole where even devils are feared to fall down when you're stoned. cold. crazy. love your moon when you're stoned. cold. crazy. love your moon its second-hand sun-light might just guide you home that second-hand sun might be your guiding one looking for redemption a place beyond desire a cloud where even gods are forced to climb higher when you're stoned. cold. crazy. love your moon when you're stoned. cold. crazy. love your moon its second-hand sun-light might just guide you home

just another glass of wine to help pass the time you know i cant sleep tonight i take down six-strings from a wall as i try to recall the very first night and as i watch these fingers play you know i cant believe that day that they couldn't undo the final button and i can hear your pretty laugh when you undid the final clasp and your beauty though gone is not forgotten but if i had just one wish well id be part of your magic its as simple as this my only wish to be part of your magic 'cos i' pulling all the memories from a hat and tonight i'm looking back at the part of your magic and all those little things that you do they make your spell come shining through and i'm part of your magic searching for a past once more digging in a bottom drawer you know i cant sleep tonight i'm just passing time away i'm reading page by page all the letters you used to write and i can still recall that day how i lied about my age and you told me that you didn't care but i can hear your pretty laugh when you saw the photographs of yours truly wearing platforms and flares but if i had just one wish well id be part of your magic its as simple as this my only wish to be part of your magic 'cos i'm pulling all the memories from a hat and tonight i'm looking back at the part of your magic and all those little things that you do they make your spell come shining through and i'm part of your magic as the night time slips away i turn to face the day and the sky colours my eyes but if i had just one wish well id be part of your magic if i had just one wish

standing high on parliament hill the city below lying dark and still shadows are growing long i always knew this day would come to reveal that i'm making it up as i go along i'm living this life like busking a song i think that i've found my beautiful poison hearing the sound of your wonderful lies i think that i've found my beautiful poison beautiful poison falling from your eyes tracing the line of the thames watching as it winds and bends to the sea something's stay out of my life but trespass every night in my dreams i'm making it up as i go along i'm living this life like busking a song I think that i've found my beautiful poison hearing the sound of your wonderful lies i think that i've found my beautiful poison beautiful poison falling from your eyes

Earthbound 09:09
I want to wake up tangled and entwined And find your body caught in mine I want to see the dawn in your eyes I want to celebrate you as the first bird cries Singing all her songs of freedom Singing all her songs of love Oh why am I so earthbound And that girl shes like the starts above And I want to feel more then one heart I want to feel another's a lovers yours in the dark And I want to sleep and know that you're there To dream I'm drowning but wake swimming in your hair Singing all my songs of freedom Singing all my songs of love Oh why am I so earthbound When that girl well shes like the stars above Earthbound But I'm still waiting for you Earthbound And are you waiting too Earthbound Singing all your songs of freedom Singing all your songs of love Oh why am I so earthbound When that girl well shes like the stars above Yes that girl well shes like the stars above

There’s a fly that buzzes round me Nothing I can do Cos the fly is just a memory A memory coloured blue I'm staring at the ceiling Feeling very old Pulling on the Rizlas Blowing smoke rings round a bulb There’s going to be hell to pay in heaven When I get there Cos I’ll say Lord Lord Lord Where was my share? I try to remember All the faces and the names Of all those long gone lovers Who’ve shared my cotton plains And my eyes are full of longing My belly full of drink Bottled up inside all the things that I think There’s going to be hell to pay in heaven When I get there Cos I’ll say Lord Lord Lord Where was my share? (But if you lie down with the dogs You’ll get up with the fleas And being a missionary is kind upon the knees Sell your soul to the devil The devil leads you on Then you find out you’ve they’ve been praying You find out you’ve been praying To the wrong one!) So I’m weighing up my life Like a butcher selling meat And pound for bloody pound It all seems so cheap Cutting through the muscles Sticking needles in a vein I’m exposing all my nerves to you But i just can’t ease the pain There’s going to be hell to pay in heaven When I get there Cos I’ll say Lord Lord Lord Where was my share?

Fish 03:17
if you're looking for answers don't come looking to me 'cos i'm the writer of songs not the writer of wrongs as you'll see if you're looking for meanings i really don't have any i took all these words from a rhyming dictionary and if that ain 't plain then let me explain i'm a dreamer i'm a schemer of that there's no doubt the last to admit i'm the first to sell out for fame and sex and cheques full of noughts 'cos i'm only a fish i'm only a fish that learnt how to walk i aimed low in life yet somehow i still missed so i got out of business got busy in politics now i'm making an issue of crime these days whilst making a packet from legal rackets i play and if that ain't clear well listen here i'm a pervert perfect at avoiding detection an upright member standing for election i'm slippery and slimy a nd i just cant get caught 'cos i'm only a fish i'm only a fish that learnt how to walk i'm a faithless fake preaching religion based on the gospels of hate and division the devil he knows 'cos my soul he's bought i'm only a fish i'm only a fish that learnt how to walk i learnt how to walk i learnt how to walk i'm just a fish

rainfalls on high ground forms the fingers of a delicate hand reaches out towards the sea rain formed a river and the river was me i was young i was wild pure and keen like a child eager to leave to my roots to find my mouth to speak my truths you know life's just a river well and i'm still flowing life's just a river and there no way of knowing life's just a river and all i've found is every path you take just takes you down everyday i grew longer a little wider a little stronger and time took its course drew me further from my source i cut a line from the country-side down to the city where the people reside they tamed my strength and they put me to work they gave me a name and filled me up with all their dirt you know life's just a river well and i'm still flowing life's just a river and there no way of knowing life's just a river and all i've found is every path you take just takes you down i've been driven by the past i've been driven by the rain driven by the knowledge that i cant go back again but i'm still flowing i'm still flowing now here i am in my middle age and i cant control my strength i cant control my rage i've got dead fish floating in my veins whatever happened to the pure pure rain you know life's just a river well and i'm still flowing life's just a river and there no way of knowing life's just a river and all i've found is every path you take just take you down rainfalls on high ground forms the fingers of a delicate hand

well i know you're but a child to me and who am i to scold but on the road to your destiny well you're bound to feel the cold oh the cold and hard shoulder where the hapless all go and with the traffic moving faster you look so slow and i know that you're innocent of all my worldly ways but on the road to your fortune well you find the place to pay in the queue to the toll-gate station the price you'll be told you'll fill the hands full of silver then on you go around the corner and over the hill and down your highway 'cos you're never happy still you're into a desert you're onto a plain you're through a valley where the rain it falls on down it falls on down and i know you're suspicious of all the things i sing and say but one day you'll find your crossroads and then you'll have to choose one way your time it will wait for no-one just the miles they'll unfold so tell me why why are you chasing your rainbows there is no gold around the corner or over the hill or down your highway you're better off just still you're into a desert you're onto a plain you're back in the city where the rain it falls on down it falls on down

Mindwalking 03:51
a traffic warden circles her prey a rusty ford that seen better days fatal flourish and stab of the pen she's into double figures and happy again in my city view it's full of everyone but you and it feels like a different man who used to take your hand my mind walking and it feels like a different world when you're beside me girl my minds walking i join a queue down in leicester square to view a film that's playing there fall asleep in a hollywood dream but i wake to the same old scene that is my city view full of everyone but you and it feels like a different man who used to take your hand my minds walking and the lights they seem dimmer now full streets empty somehow my minds walking with every face i see passing all the couples holding hands with every smile or someone laughing it sets my mind walking it feels like a different man who used to take your hand my minds walking

Outside Reviews

... one could imagine the millions of people who snaffle David Gray albums making Orchard one of their own if he too were to receive the patronage of radio play lists... on the nine minute Earthbound, Orchard deploys his arsenal of accompanists to bolster a simple acoustic guitar part to hypnotic effect.
SUNDAY TIMES

..."Outside" finally stands as a very mature album where Pat frees his conscience, giving people the benefit of his own experience. Absolutely brilliant
